How to Wear a Short-Sleeved Shirt RIGHT This Summer

A lot of us choose to stay clear of the short-sleeved shirt, probably because it can be tricky to get right. But, if you follow a few simple rules, it can be a superb addition to your summer wardrobe.

We’d argue – in fact – that it’s an absolute summer-time essential, and will help you to look stylish and put together WHILE maintaining that relaxed, summer-holiday vibe.

Wondering what are the rules that you need to follow? We’re here to help you out…

Get the colour right

As with any piece of menswear, it’s important to get the colours that are best suited for you.

While white, black and navy blue are a safe bet for anyone, there are many colours that, depending on your skin tone, can make you appear washed out. What you want, instead, is to get the colours that will contrast with and complement your skin.

For pale skin: you want to avoid lighter and pastel shades as well as neutrals, as they will blend too much with your skin tone. Instead, opt for darker shades and colours such as brown, grey and khaki. Bold blue, red and bottle green are also great choices. Go for darker and warmer shades over light, pale and soft ones.

For olive/medium skin: According to the guys at FashionBeans, with medium skin you want to ensure that you choose “shades that are either a little brighter or darker than the middle ground” – again, to avoid the clothes blending with your skin too much. This means choosing pale colours over warm shades, like light, soft neutrals over colours like mustard and olive.

For darker skin: You’re lucky to be able to wear almost any colours and hues. We’d advise that you limit dark colours such as brown and black and instead go for a brighter pop of colour.

Experiment with some prints

Summer is the best time to be more playful and have more fun with your outfits.

And what better way to show some extra personality and lightheartedness than with a printed shirt? This summer, prints that are particularly trendy are jungle, tropical and floral prints including palm leaves, animals and vintage florals.

Not feeling quite brave enough to go all out? Try incorporating some subtle prints like checks and stripes into your outfits. Vertical stripes and pinstripes are very much in this season.

The right fit

Getting the right fit is perhaps the most important thing when it comes to finding the perfect short-sleeved shirt. Here are a few quick pointers you should keep in mind:

  • Make sure the shirt is fitted (to avoid a “boxy” look) but not overly tight.
  • Don’t button it all the way up. It’s best to leave the top two buttons undone for a laid back, relaxed look.
  • Never wear a tie with your short-sleeved shirt. This rarely makes for a good look!
  • Make sure that the sleeves are not too long and they don’t stick out. They should fit close to your arms and end mid-bicep.
  • Say ‘no’ to a shirt that’s too long. If it completely covers your back pockets, it IS too long. Ideally, the hem should come down to the middle of your pants pockets.

Know what to pair it with

For a “cool” and effortless holiday-look pair your shirt with some fitted, mid-length shorts. Alternatively, you can opt for some fitted trousers or chinos.

Accessorise with your favourite pair of sunglasses and you’re good to go!
